Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore Limited Says Kharif Fertilizer Supply Secure Despite West Asia Tensions
West Asia Crisis: India currently has adequate fertilizer availability, but the protracted conflict in West Asia could create supply problems in the future. This concern was expressed by a top official at Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore Limited (FACT), one of the largest fertilizer suppliers to South Indian states.
It seems that there is enough fertilizer in the country, but if the war in West Asia continues for a long time, then there could be some issues in the coming months. This was said by a senior official from a government-run fertilizer firm.
FACT is a government-run fertilizer firm, and it supplies fertilizers to many states in South India. It uses raw materials such as rock phosphate and phosphoric acid, which are imported into India by sea from various West Asian and Middle Eastern countries.
FACT’s Managing Director, S. Sakthimani, says that there is enough urea in the country, and so there are no issues in this regard for the upcoming Kharif season. He expressed hope that the situation could return to normal within a month. According to Sakthimani, there is currently no harvest season in India, and it will only begin after July. He assured that there is sufficient availability of urea for the Kharif season and hopes that the situation will be resolved within a month. This will not cause any problems for farmers.

However, he warned that if this situation persists for six months, it could impact fertilizer supplies during the next crop season, the Rabi season. The government and companies are already taking necessary steps to address this possibility. FACT sources gas not only from the Middle East but also from Australia. Currently, there are no major gas supply problems. Although there are fluctuations in some locations, this is not a concern for the fertilizer sector. The official also stated that the central government has procured stocks of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and double super phosphate (DSP) from various companies, which will prevent any problems.
The company currently has approximately 1.4 lakh metric tons of fertilizer in stock. It is expected to produce approximately 1.5 lakh metric tons of fertilizer between March and April 2026. The company aims to produce approximately 5.5 lakh metric tons of fertilizer for the Kharif season by September 2026, while it also plans to import approximately 1 lakh metric tons. The company stated that farmers need not panic. With government support, every possible step is being taken to maintain fertilizer supply.
In India, Kharif crops are sown with the arrival of the monsoon in June-July and harvested in September-October, while Rabi crops are sown in October-November and harvested in April-May. Urea is widely used to increase yields in both seasons.
