Media reports say that there are more than 1,100 poultry farms in Namakkal, both large and medium, which keep millions of egg-laying hens. This is the reason why Namakkal is India's largest egg production hub.

Estimates indicate that Namakkal's annual egg turnover exceeds ₹10,000 crore. Egg production also supports other egg-related industries, including processed products, the feed industry, transportation, packaging, and export activities.

The local economy of Namakkal depends on the poultry sector, and thousands of families earn their livelihoods.

Namakkal eggs are exported not only to Tamil Nadu, but also to Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and other parts of the country. Furthermore, Namakkal eggs play an important role in government nutrition schemes and mid-day meal programs.

Beyond the domestic market, Namakkal eggs are also exported abroad. Countries that receive eggs from here include the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the Maldives, and several African countries. Eggs have even been exported to the United States.

Namakkal's egg industry has faced many challenges due to international competition, rising transportation costs, and the high cost of animal feed. Despite these challenges, the city has maintained its title of Egg Capital of India.
