DGCA Updates Accessibility Norms: Free Wheelchair Service Only for Passengers with Disabilities

DGCA: The DGCA has issued new rules to prevent misuse of wheelchair services at airports. Under this, passengers who are not disabled or have reduced mobility will now have to pay a fee for this service. Airlines must display this fee on their websites. DGCA Updates Accessibility Norms: Free Wheelchair Service Only for Passengers with Disabilities

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued new rules regarding the use of wheelchair services at airports. Under this rule, if an able-bodied person (not disabled or with mobility impairments) wishes to use a wheelchair at the airport, they may have to pay an additional fee. The DGCA states that airlines may charge a reasonable fee for wheelchair or other assistance services from passengers who are not disabled or have reduced mobility. This fee will be clearly displayed on the airline's website.

Notably, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has amended the Civil Aviation Requirements (CARs) governing air travel for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility. This decision comes amid numerous complaints against airlines and airport operators regarding wheelchair bookings in recent months.

According to these DGCA regulations, passengers requiring assistance services (such as wheelchairs) must arrive at the airport well in advance of their flight. Airlines will then be able to determine a minimum reporting time based on airport conditions (such as terminal layout, security procedures, etc.) to ensure smooth and efficient delivery of assistance.
