Tamil Nadu Sees Dengue, Swine Flu Surge; Doctors Urge Caution
Chennai, September 5:Tamil Nadu is recording a sharp rise in dengue and swine flu cases compared with last year, prompting health authorities to step up surveillance ahead of the monsoon season.
According to Public Health Department data, 13,573 dengue cases were reported across the state between January 1 and August 30 this year, with nine deaths. While the fatality rate remains low, officials are concerned about the pace of infections through July and August.
Month-wise figures show 1,722 cases in January, 1,322 in February, 1,228 in March, 1,201 in April and 1,062 in May. Cases climbed again from June (1,384) through July (2,339) and August (3,315). The year-on-year jump is sharper still — July cases rose from 1,880 last year to 2,339 this year, and August cases nearly doubled, from 1,832 to 3,315.
Chennai has reported the highest caseload at 2,584, followed by Coimbatore with 1,999. Tamil Nadu had recorded 25,533 dengue cases for all of last year, a decline from the higher numbers seen in 2022–2024 — making this year's pre-monsoon surge a reversal of that trend.
Swine flu (H1N1) infections have also risen sharply, crossing 1,500 cases this year and placing Tamil Nadu second nationally by caseload. August alone saw a steep jump — from 46 cases in the same month last year to 645 this year.
Doctors attribute the spread partly to Chennai's population density and inconsistent adherence to preventive measures.
Where the response stands: The state's Directorate of Public Health has intensified inter-departmental coordination — working with the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, School Education Department, and Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department — to strengthen early detection and eliminate mosquito-breeding sites. However, the state has not yet begun rollout of a recently approved dengue vaccine, with officials citing pending clearance from the central drugs regulator on procurement and distribution.
What to watch for: Dengue typically presents with high-grade fever, severe joint and muscle pain, headache and nausea; in more serious cases, bleeding from the gums, blood in urine or stool, or unusual bruising can occur and need immediate medical attention. Swine flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body ache and fatigue. Doctors advise anyone with fever or respiratory symptoms to avoid crowded places, wear a mask where appropriate, and seek medical care early rather than self-treating.
People confirmed with swine flu are advised to isolate for at least five days. For dengue prevention, health officials continue to stress clearing stagnant water around homes and workplaces, since standing water remains the primary breeding ground for the Aedes mosquito that transmits the virus.
With the monsoon still ahead, doctors say sustained mosquito control, environmental cleanliness, public awareness and early treatment will be key to preventing a further spike in the coming weeks.
