As Nepal battles one of its worst flash flood disasters in recent memory, India has moved swiftly and decisively — dispatching nearly 40 tonnes of humanitarian supplies, medicines and food packets from the Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad to the Himalayan nation. The scale, speed and precision of the operation offer a rare look inside how India's Air Force machinery mobilises for cross-border disaster relief, and the officers overseeing the mission were unambiguous in their message: this is what Hindon exists for.
Speaking to IANS, Air Officer Commanding Hindon Airforce Station, Air Commodore Rajiv Dobhal, framed the airbase's role in an unmistakable line. "We are ever ready for such tasks. We have already been mandated for that, and we all have the experience also. We have done it a number of times before this, not only in Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and even in Venezuela. So, we are ever ready for such tasks. As soon as we got the information, we started our work," he said.
That casual reference to Venezuela is telling — Hindon isn't a base built for regional response alone; it operates as a hub for India's global Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) footprint.
'The Tip of the Spear'
Chief Operating Officer, Group Captain Jai Ganesh, offered an even sharper articulation of the airbase's role. "I would like to think of Hindon as the tip of the spear when it comes to HADR operations. So, when the flood struck Nepal, we got the information yesterday afternoon that there would be flood relief which would need to be airlifted from our base. We are generally ready for such contingencies, and we are well prepared, and the ecosystem of Hindon is developed in a way that we handle such contingencies very effectively."
The activation window was extraordinarily compressed. "When we got the information in the afternoon, we kept the C-130s and C-17 aircraft on standby. As a first responder, the C-130 took off (with the aid) around 8.30 p.m. yesterday," he said. From the moment of alert to first wheels-up: a matter of hours.
The 40-Tonne Payload
The commander of the second dispatch aircraft, Wing Commander Lagnajeet Nayak, detailed the shape of the ongoing mission. "Yesterday we received the mission (information) for the Nepal HADR. In the night we received the NDRF load and the medical supplies… It will take around 1 hour 15 minutes to reach Nepal. We are carrying approximately 35 to 40 tonnes of load, and it includes medical relief load, dignity kit and other essential supplies for Nepal."
The composition of the payload — medical relief, dignity kits, essential supplies, NDRF materials — reflects the immediate priorities on the ground in Nepal: keep survivors alive, keep families dignified, and enable Nepal's own disaster teams to operate at scale.
Flying Into Difficult Weather
The mission is being conducted under demanding weather and airspace conditions. Nepal has been witnessing low clouds, and combined with civil aviation traffic and other operational parameters, the IAF is carrying additional fuel to build flexibility into the mission.
"So that if we are unable to land in the first go, we can hold in the air for around one to one and a half hours," Wing Commander Nayak explained. "But in case the delay is uncertain or gets prolonged, we have adequate diversions in India. We have demarcated two bases where we can divert, refuel and proceed to Nepal whenever they give clearance."
Optimising for Kathmandu Airport
A less-noticed but crucial dimension of the mission is how India is tailoring its aircraft loading to match Kathmandu's operating capacity. "The capacity of the aircraft is 70 tonnes, but we are carrying 40 tonnes so that we can turn around within three to four hours and vacate the Kathmandu airfield," Wing Commander Nayak said. In effect, India is deliberately flying below capacity to keep the airport clear for other rescue and relief flights — a small but sharp indicator of the coordination happening between the two nations.
Why It Matters
Beyond the humanitarian value, the operation carries strategic weight. India has consistently positioned itself as the "first responder" in South Asia — from Nepal's 2015 earthquake to disasters in Sri Lanka and Myanmar. The rapid Hindon dispatch reinforces that positioning at a moment when hundreds of Indian citizens are also among the missing in the Nepal disaster, particularly Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims. In effect, this is diplomacy, disaster relief and citizen safety folded into a single operation.
Industry and Institutional Impact
Hindon has quietly emerged over the years as one of the world's most credentialed HADR airbases. The presence of both C-130J Super Hercules and C-17 Globemaster III aircraft on standby, combined with a mature ecosystem for cross-border relief coordination, makes the base a strategic asset of significant scale. Each such mission adds to institutional muscle memory — the kind that translates into faster reactions when the next disaster hits, whether across the Himalayas or across oceans.
The Bigger Picture
The Nepal floods have shattered towns, taken hundreds of lives and left thousands searching for the missing. In the middle of that chaos, India's response from Hindon represents a very specific kind of solidarity — quiet, professional, high-volume, and delivered with the calm confidence of a base that has done this many times before. As Wing Commander Nayak's crew flew into low clouds and uncertain landing conditions, the message from Hindon was clear: Nepal is not going through this alone.
