India Power Demand Surges in FY27: Coal Generation Rises 9.9% as Demand Hits Records
Coal-fired thermal plants have played a key role in meeting the growing demand for electricity, while a weak monsoon and high temperatures have increased pressure on the grid.
The demand for electricity in the first half of the financial year 2026-27 was very robust and was catered to mainly through coal-powered thermal power plants. There has been an increase in solar and wind energy production as well, but thermal power plants have become more and more critical when there is record power demand.
Weak monsoon season and high temperatures made the need for power for cooling and irrigation rise. The demand for power was record breaking during the months of August and September.
The power demand from April till August rose by 9.5 percent, compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. Growth in the same period in the previous fiscal year was only 0.3 percent.
