Shreya Shantanu Mundhada of Mumbai created history when she became the first Indian girl to secure the gold medal at the 15th European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) 2026 in Bordeaux, France. The Indian team comprising four members did incredibly well, winning one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal. It is a huge feat for India in this international math contest for girls.

Unofficially, India's team ranks sixth among 67 countries, its best-ever ranking since the inception of this competition. This is India’s best-ever team ranking in the EGMO. "This year saw several outstanding performances on the part of our students in this major international mathematics competition," said HBCSE-TIFR, the body that selects India’s Olympic teams.

This was only India's second time participating in the EGMO with an all-female team. Previously, India has been participating in the EGMO as a guest nation since 2015, with the team always consisting of a male member. However, since last year, the entire team, including members and supervisors, has been all-female.

Sanjana Philo Chacko of Kerala won the silver medal, and Shivani Bharat Kumar of Tamil Nadu won the bronze medal, further strengthening the team's medal tally. Sreemoyee Bera of Kolkata was also part of the four-member team. The team was guided by Dr. Vaidehi Thatte (team leader), Dr. Mridul Thatte (deputy leader), and supervisor Aditi Muthkhod.

This year's event saw participation from 260 students from 67 countries, including 41 European countries. This outstanding performance by India not only underlines the growing potential of young mathematicians but also signals a strong shift towards greater participation of girls in advanced science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

HBCSE conducts the National Olympiad Examination, which is a gateway for candidates to advance through various stages and secure a coveted spot in the final team representing India at various international Olympiads.
