Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026: India’s 492 Athletes Face Contingent Limit Amid Japan’s Accommodation Issue
Asian Games: There is not much time left until the Asian Games are held. Before that, all countries may have to reduce their contingent.
All countries may be asked to cut down their contingents for the 2026 Asian Games to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Japan has already made provision for accommodation for 15,000 athletes, but the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has received entries of 17,000 participants out of which 11,000 are athletes and 6,000 are officials. Rather than constructing a usual Games Village for the 2026 Asian Games, Japan has made arrangements for 15,000 people by accommodating them in hotels, temporary wooden accommodation, and the Costa Serena Cruise ship.
Therefore, it has been the request of Japan to all the participating countries through the OCA to cut down their contingents. The OCA has advised all the countries not to send their athletes late and keep the contingency within the prescribed limit.
India has selected a contingent of 492 athletes for the Asian Games, but the number of support staff accompanying them has not been finalized. According to a source at the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is still in discussions with all sports federations regarding this. According to the rules, support staff can only constitute 33% of the total contingent. Consequently, no more than 162 support staff can be sent for every 492 athletes.
