US Confirms Weapons in Space for First Time: Troy Meink Reveals On-Orbit Space Control Capabilities

According to the Financial Times, the US disclosure has fueled speculation about the weapon's nature. Victoria Samson of the Secure World Foundation suggested it could be a space-based jammer. She added that the US generally avoids direct attacks that could create large amounts of space debris.

However, according to Clayton Swope of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Meineck's announcement is so vague that it is difficult to assess the actual threat. To make it an effective warning to Russia or China, some information about the weapon's destructive capability and use conditions will be necessary.

This announcement comes amid the Trump administration's "Golden Dome" missile defense plan. Meineck stated that the US possesses "flight-ready hardware" for space-based interceptors, which are intended to intercept incoming missiles in space.

According to the US, China is rapidly investing in space and counter-space capabilities, while Russia also considers space a key area for future warfare. In 2024, the US accused Russia of developing a satellite that could be capable of targeting other spacecraft.

There are also fears that the US move could escalate an arms race in space. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits the deployment of weapons of mass destruction in orbit, but does not explicitly prohibit conventional weapons or systems that could intercept satellites. The US Space Force maintains that its activities will be consistent with international law.

Meink said that in the changing strategic environment, it is essential for the US to maintain its dominance in space as well as in the air.
