Bombay High Court Clears Adani Group Project at Bandra Reclamation, Dismisses PILs

The Bombay High Court has dismissed the PILs filed against private development on the land of Bandra Reclamation. This issue was raised by the Adani Group over work being carried out here for construction. The court stated that this land of Bandra Reclamation does not come under the restricted area under environmental laws, and therefore, it is not wrong legally to construct a private building here.

Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) had sanctioned a plot of land for private development in the Bandra Reclamation area of Mumbai. Two petitions have been filed on this decision, the first of which has been filed by environmental activist Joru Bathena, and the second has been filed by Bandra Reclamation Area Volunteers Organization. The petitioners demanded that there should be no private development on this land, but it should be kept as a green open area (green space). They argued that such construction work violates the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules.

Adani Group and the Ministry of Environment told the court that the plot on which the construction is to be done is outside the CRZ area, so there is no legal obstacle in doing development work here. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also opposed the petitions. BMC said that it has given permission to Adani Group to build a residential building on 28 acres of land, as this land falls outside the limits of CRZ.

The Bombay High Court dismissed both the petitions. The court held that the area in which the development is proposed is legally buildable, and the petitioners' claim that environmental rules are being violated here is not correct.
