If the sleep occurs unnoticed on the part of the driver while driving during nighttime journeys, a quick nap might result in an accident causing death.

Long-distance lorry and bus drivers are more prone to this risk than others. In order to avoid the dangers of the problem, scientists from IIT Madras have come up with a smart driver’s seat, which senses fatigue from the body of the driver and wakes him/her in time. The 'IntelliSeat' will also inform the fleet owner, if required.

As reported by the press, the Rehabilitation Bioengineering Group of IIT Madras, headed by Professor Venkatesh Balasubramanian, came up with the concept of the driver's seat in collaboration with vehicle seat manufacturer Harita.
