India-Canada Economic Ties: Nirmala Sitharaman to Hold Key Talks on Trade, Investment and Finance

The primary objective of the visit is to strengthen bilateral economic and financial partnerships, deepen investment ties, and advance cooperation on shared global economic priorities.

During her visit to Canada, Sitharaman will participate in the first "Economic and Financial Dialogue" with Canadian Finance and National Revenue Minister François-Philippe Champagne in Toronto. Discussions will focus on economic development, financial sector cooperation, bilateral investment opportunities, and shared international priorities.

India and Canada's relations were strained for nearly two years. Relations have begun to recover following the arrival of a new government earlier this year. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has also visited India.

In recent months, the two countries have been discussing increased cooperation in areas such as energy, critical minerals, technology, and supply chains. Negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CIPA) are also ongoing. This meeting is expected to provide new impetus to these efforts.

The Finance Minister will also participate in an investment roundtable in Toronto with leading business representatives from the energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals sectors. In addition, meetings will be held with Canadian business leaders, including senior officials from Indian public sector banks.

India is striving to attract more foreign investment from Canada. Sitharaman will also hold separate meetings with CEOs and senior executives of Canadian companies.
