The Nigerian government has fined Meta, the country's largest social media business, US$220 million. The government claims Meta continued to violate local norms despite the warning. Meta has yet to comment on this.

According to the government statement, the investigation found the company violating the country's data protection and consumer rights laws related to Facebook and WhatsApp "many times", after which this fine has been imposed. Nigeria's Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has explained in its report how Meta has violated data laws in the West African country in five ways.

These practices include sharing data of Nigerians without authorization, depriving users of the right to determine the use of their data, and discriminatory behavior as well as abusing market dominance. "Having been satisfied with the significant evidence on record and having provided every opportunity to the Meta parties to explain their position, the Commission has now issued a final order and imposed a fine on the Meta parties," FCCPC Chief Executive Officer Adamu Abdullahi said in a statement.
