What began as a routine flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, September 30, became one of the most alarming aviation incidents of the year. A violent confrontation broke out in the cockpit of flydubai Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 carrying more than 170 passengers. The aircraft lost altitude, transmitted emergency signals and diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

At the centre of the story is Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot now being hailed as the man who helped prevent a disaster.

What Happened in the Cockpit

According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the co-pilot attacked Machchhar and attempted to interfere with the aircraft's controls. Netanyahu said Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door despite being seriously injured, allowing a crew member and passengers to enter and restrain the other pilot.
