Asian Games Kurash: Pinki Balhara Clinches Bronze, Loses to South Korea’s Sumin Mo in Semi-Final
Asian Games: Pinki Balhara has won a medal for India in the women's Kurash event. She lost 0-5 to Sumin Mo of South Korea in the women's under-78 kg semi-finals, settling for a bronze medal.
Pinki Balhara of India clinched the bronze medal at the women's under-78kg Kurash competition on Monday with a 0-5 loss to South Korea's Sumin Mo in the semi-finals. In the match, a 'dakki' penalty was given to Pinki, whereas 'yeonbosh' was given to Sumin Mo. This is the second Asian Games medal win by Pinki. She won the silver medal in the women's under-52kg weight category during the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games where the sport of Kurash was included in the Asian Games for the first time.
Previously, Pinki made her way to the semi-finals after beating Lim Garam of South Korea 3-0. The 27-year-old Indian athlete scored the winning point by getting the 'Chala' point and Lim failed to score any points in the whole match. 'Chala' point is scored when a player throws his/her opponent down to the floor without completing full control of that player. According to the rules of the tournament, there is no playoff match for the bronze medal and both losing semi-finalists receive the bronze medal. Thus, Pinki secured another medal for India.
Pinki also won a gold medal at the Asian Junior Judo Championships 2018. She failed to make the Indian Asian Games team in the judo event. However, Pinki later qualified for the Kurash event and won a silver medal. Pinki marks India's first success in Kurash competitions. On Sunday, Indian players failed to win a single match. Vishal's journey in the men's 90+ kg category ended in the quarter-finals. She lost 0-5 to Thailand's Kunnathip Ye-On.
