Rajasthan AQI: Sawai Madhopur Most Polluted at 306
Sawai Madhopur records AQI 306, the worst in Rajasthan, as winter pollution rises. Check AQI of Jaipur, Bikaner and other cities and health advisories.
When people think of North India's winter air crisis, they usually picture Delhi. This year's first winter bulletin shows the problem is spreading well into Rajasthan, and the city at the top of the list is a surprising one.
Sawai Madhopur, home to the Ranthambore tiger reserve and better known for safaris than smog, has become the most polluted city in Rajasthan, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 306. That puts it in the 'very poor' category, and PM2.5 was identified as the main pollutant. These fine particles can reach deep into the lungs, which is why doctors worry most about them. The reading comes just as the tourist season begins, when visitors from India and abroad head to the district.
A state-wide slide, from the desert to the capital
Sawai Madhopur is not an isolated case. Twelve other cities fell into the 'poor' range of 201 to 300. Bikaner led them at 273, followed by Dausa (232), Churu (231), Sikar (227), Nagaur (225), Alwar (224), Jhunjhunu (224), Karauli (215), Sri Ganganagar (213), Jaisalmer (210) and Jaipur (207).
