Karan Johar is known for big, glossy, emotional cinema. His Diwali message this year was very simple by comparison.
On Saturday, the filmmaker shared a couple of festive photos with his children, daughter Roohi and son Yash, on Instagram. All three were dressed in ethnic attire. His caption was short and personal.
"My ❤️ My world…My blessing…Shukrana to the universe for completing me with Roohi and Yash… we are blessed to have our mothers blessings… happy Diwali to all you from us," he wrote.
He chose the word "Shukrana", which means gratitude. He also described his children as the ones who "complete" him. Together these say a lot about how Karan sees his life today. Since becoming a single father in 2017, he has spoken often about how parenthood changed his priorities. Including his mother's blessing in the note is consistent with the three-generation household he has frequently described in interviews.
The post quickly drew warm responses from his friends in the industry. Director Farah Khan, one of his closest friends, commented, "Bless", followed by a red heart emoji. Malaika Arora wrote, "Cuties", along with an evil eye emoticon.
A protective father in an industry he knows too well
The festive post comes a little after Karan made a frank admission about his children's future. On a recent episode of 'Koffee With Karan' featuring Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, he said he is almost trying to keep Roohi and Yash away from the film industry. He worries he may not be able to protect them when they eventually enter Bollywood.
He has spent decades at the centre of the Hindi film business as a director, producer and talent launcher, and yet he said he remains conscious of its difficulties and pressures.
"Well, look, as I said, it's not an easy place. It's tough. I am almost dissuading my children from the business. And everybody says, 'Why are you doing that? Why are you doing that?' I am like, look, I will be too old to protect them at that time," he said.
Kareena, who belongs to one of Bollywood's oldest film families, offered a different view. "But I feel maybe the protection is also what is causing the issue. I think sometimes we just have to, like, probably just… you know, we're all so protective towards our children," she said.
"I feel sometimes our parents just let us go and say, 'Karni hai toh karo, you know, karo. You have to go and 'ragdo,'" she added, and Karan agreed with her.
Why it resonates
The two moments together show both sides of Karan Johar. In public he is one of the most powerful figures in Hindi cinema, and he has often been criticised over nepotism and star-kid launches. As a parent, he is openly cautious about the industry he helped shape. His Diwali post shows the father, not the producer.
