Gautam Gambhir, the mentor who took the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 championship almost two years ago, could be back in the league. The 2008 Indian Premier League champions, Rajasthan Royals (RR), have offered Gautam Gambhir the biggest deal in the history of the Indian Premier League, where Gambhir is to be the co-owner, mentor, and partner.

According to a report in Dainik Jagran, one of the new owners of the Rajasthan Royals has offered Gambhir three key roles: partner, mentor, and CEO. The report states that most of the franchise's existing shareholders are selling their stake to the new owners, and the deal is currently in a transferable state. An owner associated with the new management has offered Gambhir a 2 to 3 percent stake, along with the role of CEO and mentor.

However, Gambhir cannot accept this offer as long as he remains the head coach of the Indian cricket team. This is because, as per the Supreme Court ruling based on the Lodha Committee recommendations, no individual can be a part of an IPL franchise and the Indian cricket team at the same time, as this would be a conflict of interest.

If Gambhir accepts Rajasthan's offer, he will have to resign as head coach of the Indian team. Sources close to him have declined to comment on the matter but have indicated that he is currently committed to his current role. His contract as India's head coach expires after the 2027 ODI World Cup.

After retiring as a player, Gambhir has been associated with two IPL franchises. In 2022 and 2023, he mentored the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and led the team to the playoffs in both seasons. He then joined KKR in the 2024 season, leading the team to victory, after which he replaced Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the Indian team.

Currently, Gambhir is leading India's ongoing T20 World Cup campaign. Defending champions India secured a place in the Super 8s by winning all three of their group stage matches against the USA, Namibia, and Pakistan. The team still has another group match to play this week against the Netherlands.
