Cricket Bodies Must Ensure Good Governance and Avoid Conflict of Interest: Supreme Court
The Supreme Court has directed state cricket associations to reform the district associations. The objective is to ensure professional, transparent, and sports-friendly functioning. The bench emphasized reforms such as transparency in player selection and contracts, good governance, and the prevention of conflicts of interest. The court also underlined the importance of sports in national life, which promotes unity, brotherhood, and teamwork.
The Supreme Court on Friday stated that state cricket associations should undertake the task of initiating reforms to ensure that district cricket associations function in a professional and transparent manner.
A bench of Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe has opined that these reforms could include transparency in the selection and execution of players’ contracts. The bench opined that district associations could adopt reform measures on a voluntary basis, which include good governance, transparency, and the absence of conflicts of interest.
These observations were made while the bench was hearing a petition filed by the Tiruchirapalli District Cricket Association against the order of the Madras High Court on the issue of voting and membership rights.

The bench said, "Since matters relating to the membership and structure of the appellant association are pending before the High Court, we believe that these questions should be resolved as soon as possible."
Recognizing the importance of sports in national life, the Supreme Court observed that national, international, regional, or even neighborhood sports in India serve as a workplace where unity and collective purpose are embodied. The Supreme Court observed that sports unite individuals from different social, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds for a common goal, symbolizing the constitutional value of fraternity.
Here, individual and collective aspirations converge. On the field, teamwork inspires individuals to work together, setting aside personal differences. The bench said, "Sports inculcates habits of cooperation, solidarity, and mutual respect."
