Dignitaries Expected, Devotees First

Nag said several dignitaries were expected to visit during the celebrations, while stressing that devotees remained the focus of the arrangements.

“The Health Minister is visiting us today, and we welcome them. The Lieutenant Governor will also visit, along with several others. Everyone is welcome, especially the devotees. We receive a large number of devotees and ensure that they have a meaningful spiritual experience,” he said.

When the Prime Minister Came Calling

The temple drew national attention last year when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited a Durga Puja pandal in CR Park on Maha Ashtami. He offered prayers to Goddess Durga amid the chanting of mantras, performed aarti at the Kali Bari Temple and took part in celebrations reflecting traditional Bengali culture. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had accompanied him on the visit.

Saptami Meets Navratri Day 7

Saturday marks the seventh day of Navratri, dedicated to Maa Kalaratri, and coincides with Maha Saptami celebrations at the temple. Maha Saptami is a key day in Bengal’s Durga Puja, when devotees perform special rituals and offer prayers to the Goddess.

This year, the Saptami tithi prevails at sunrise on both October 17 and 18, which is why some calendars, including the Bengal Durga Puja schedule for Kolkata, mark Maha Saptami on Sunday instead. Pujas across the country follow their own panjika traditions, so dates can differ by a day.

Who Is Maa Kalaratri?

Maa Kalaratri is regarded as one of Durga’s fiercest manifestations, associated with the destruction of evil, ignorance and negative forces. Despite her formidable appearance, she is worshipped as a protective and benevolent deity who blesses devotees with courage and fearlessness. Grey is traditionally associated with the seventh day, symbolising balance, composure and resilience.
