The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed commitment to constitute shortly a multi-member committee that would speak to the farmers and settle the farmers' dissatisfaction amicably. The bench of Justice Suryakant, Justice Dipankar Dutta, and Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan scheduled the next date of hearing in the case for September 2.

The bench inquired about the suggestions from the Punjab and Haryana governments about potential issues involving the farmers. On that, the Punjab government informed the apex court that they held discussions with the farmers agitating and blocking the highway pursuant to the order of the apex court on August 12, and the farmers agreed to open the blocked highway partially.

It asked the Punjab and Haryana governments to continue their dialogue with the protesting farmers and persuade them to remove their tractors and trolleys from the highway.

The apex court had on August 12 asked the Punjab government to persuade farmers protesting at the Shambhu border since February 13 to remove tractors and trolleys off the road, stating "highways are not parking places".

The Supreme Court was hearing a petition of the Haryana government challenging the order of the High Court, which has asked the State to remove the barricades erected at the Shambhu border near Ambala within a week. The protesting farmers have been camping in a running stir from February 13. Earlier, in February, the Haryana government had erected barricades on the Ambala-New Delhi National Highway when the 'Samyukta Kisan Morcha' (non-political) and 'Kisan Mazdoor Morcha' announced march to Delhi supporting an idea to give farmers a legal guarantee of minimum support price for their produce.
