Assam Announces Rs 5 Lakh Extra for Flood Deaths

The additional amount will be paid over and above the existing ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh under standard norms, bringing the total compensation for each deceased person’s family to Rs 9 lakh.

Sarma also announced that every flood-affected family in the worst-hit districts will receive an immediate interim payment of Rs 15,000 to cover urgent needs. He stated that the relief would be extended without discrimination to all eligible households, including government employees, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA workers), mid-day meal workers and other categories that are sometimes excluded from certain schemes.

The announcements come as Assam faces one of the more severe flood spells of the current season. Thousands of families across multiple districts have been affected, with damage reported to homes, agricultural land and public infrastructure.

State authorities continue relief and rehabilitation work in coordination with district administrations. Rescue operations and the distribution of essential supplies remain under way in the affected areas.

The new package is intended to deliver immediate financial support while longer-term rehabilitation measures are intensified. Officials indicated that the focus remains on reaching eligible families quickly and ensuring that assistance reaches those most in need without procedural delays.
