Medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir have reason to celebrate. The Union Territory’s government on Wednesday issued an order raising the monthly stipend of MBBS and BDS interns, including foreign medical graduates (FMGs), from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000.
According to the order from the Health and Medical Education Department, the revised stipend will be effective retrospectively from October 1, 2026. It applies to medical and dental interns across Jammu and Kashmir.
From Hunger Strike to Formal Order
The decision followed days of protest. Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo had earlier assured interns that the government had agreed in principle to raise the stipend. But with no formal order in hand, the interns began a hunger strike on Monday.
