The Australian government has proposed banning social media for all children aged below 16 years, described as a "world-first" move by its prime minister, Anthony Albanese. The law may come into effect before the end of next year.

Australia is trialing an age-verification system that prevents youngsters from accessing such social media platforms. It provides identification through the use of biometrics or government-issued identification. If this really happens, then it will be the first country in the world to plan to implement the ban with the help of such an age verification system.

Albanese said that "social media is harming our children and I am announcing to stop it." He specifically mentioned the negative impact of harmful content related to girls and anti-women content targeted at boys.

It can be the toughest law in the world, which will have no exemption even on parental consent and no privileges for existing accounts. The responsibility for this ban would rest with the social media sites to take proper steps in its implementation.
