E10 Petrol May Return for Older Vehicles? Government, Oil Companies Discuss Fuel Supply Options

There has been talk regarding the introduction of E10 petrol along with the currently used E20 petrol for old cars, coming from the government. After the proposal put forth by the Chief Economic Advisor, V. Anantha Nageswaran, talks have started between the government and oil companies on this issue. But these talks are at their preliminary stage, and no decision regarding this matter has been reached yet.

India fulfilled its objective of 20% ethanol blending in petrol five years ahead of time. After that, E20 petrol became the primary choice. It has created concerns for owners of old cars and two-wheelers. According to them, the use of E20 petrol causes a decrease in mileage and even damages the engines in vehicles that were not made to accommodate higher blending levels of ethanol.

The biggest challenge facing the government is the fuel supply and distribution system. If both E10 and E20 petrol are made available, additional storage facilities will be required at petrol pumps to accommodate the different fuels. Furthermore, the entire transportation and distribution network may need to be managed differently. The government has previously described the availability of different grades of petrol across the country as a costly and complex task. Therefore, the return of E10 is not just a matter of fuel production, but of the entire supply system.
