Air India CEO Campbell Wilson Steps Down, New Chief to Be Named Soon
Air India has confirmed that CEO Campbell Wilson has resigned. In a letter, he described it as a "natural turning point," saying it was the right time to hand over the reins to the company's next phase. Wilson became CEO after privatization in 2022 and had expressed his desire to step down in 2026 in 2024.
According to Air India, its CEO and MD, Campbell Wilson, has resigned from his position. The corporation will now establish a search committee to choose a new CEO and appoint his successor in the coming months. Prior to this, another resignation occurred from IndiGo, whose CEO is Peter Elbers.
In his resignation letter, Campbell Wilson mentioned that resigning at this moment is a natural phase of his life, and it is an appropriate time to step down and allow someone else to lead the next phase of Air India’s development.
According to Campbell Wilson, during the past four years since Air India’s privatization, there were four successful airline mergers and acquisitions. This has also led to a transition from public to private sector practices and a renewal of the leadership team, workforce, culture, and working methods.

According to the company, Wilson had already communicated his desire to step down in 2026 to Chairman N. Chandrasekaran in 2024 and had been working to stabilize the company since then.
He will remain in his position until a new CEO is appointed. In a letter to his employees, he stated that during his tenure, the company has made several improvements, including implementing new systems, improving services, and adding 100 new aircraft.
He also stated that the interiors of older aircraft have been almost completely redesigned, and deliveries of new aircraft have begun.
Wilson said it was time to hand over the reins of the company to someone else so Air India could move forward. He thanked employees for their support and love during his 30-year career and concluded his message with a "Jai Hind."
New Zealand-born Wilson took over the reins of the company in 2012, when Air India was privatized. He resigned before the end of his five-year term.
During his tenure, he attempted to modernize the fleet, improve services, and streamline operations. However, he faced numerous challenges, including supply chain problems, delayed aircraft deliveries, and rising costs.
The most significant incident during his tenure was the crash of Air India Flight 171 in June 2015. The Boeing 787-8 aircraft, flying from Ahmedabad to London, crashed shortly after takeoff, killing almost all of the 242 passengers and 19 people on the ground.
