Asian Games 2026 Badminton: India’s Campaign Ends After PV Sindhu, Unnati Hooda Quarterfinal Losses
Asia Games: India suffered three setbacks in the badminton quarterfinals at the Asian Games. The pairs of Tanisha Crasto-Dhruv Kapila and Trisha Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand were eliminated. Unnati Hooda was then defeated by Akane Yamaguchi in three games. India's medal hopes now rest on PV Sindhu.
It was a disappointing Sunday for India in badminton at the Asian Games. The badminton campaign of India was over. There were losses in four different events. In mixed doubles, Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila and in women's doubles, Trisha Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand got knocked out in the quarterfinals.
Soon after that, the young player Unnati Hooda was defeated by the world number three Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in women's singles. Unnati fought bravely but lost the final game 17-21. Then came the turn of veteran PV Sindhu, who lost to China's world number four Chen Yu Fei 21-11, 18-21, 10-21 in the quarterfinals. Sindhu won the first game but lost the other two to get knocked out of the tournament.
In mixed doubles, Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila lost to the world number one Chinese pair of Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping 21-14, 18-21, 21-18. The Chinese pair started by taking an 11-9 lead at the mid-game break of the first game and then won the game 21-14. After the loss in the first game, Tanisha and Dhruv staged a comeback and won the second game 21-18, making the score level in the match. In the third and deciding game, the Chinese players started by taking a 12-6 lead. Tanisha and Dhruv staged another comeback but still lost the game 21-18, making their way to the semifinals.
