Road Transport Ministry has set a target of building 13813 km long highways, know the details
Indian Highways: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has informed that it will build a record 13813 km long highway across the country during the financial year 2024.
The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways aims to create a national record by constructing 13,813 km of highways in the current financial year. Ministry Secretary Anurag Jain gave this information on Friday.
Anurag Jain, Secretary, Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, in his address, said that his ministry aims to eliminate less than two-lane national highways by 2027-28. The total length of national highways with less than two lanes was 25,517 km in March 2012, which was 30.1 per cent of the total length. At present, the total length of less than two-lane NHs is 14,350 km (9.8 per cent of the total length).
The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways constructed 10,237 km of national highways in the financial year 2019-20, 13,327 km in 2020-21, 10,457 km in 2021-22, 10,331 km in 2022-23. The ministry has constructed 6,216 km of NH in the current financial year till December, compared to 5,774 km in the year-ago period.
Ministry Secretary Anurag Jain further said that the Road Ministry aims to raise Rs 40,000 crore through asset monetization in the current financial year. There will be more private investment for road projects going forward, he said.
According to Secretary Anurag Jain, in the next 10-12 years, India's road infrastructure will be at par with the road infrastructure of developed countries. NHAI and National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited are primarily responsible for the construction of national highways and expressways in the country.
