Playing U19 World Cup Could Harm Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s Long-Term Development: WV Raman

Former head coach of the Indian women's side WV Raman is advising care with playing 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi at U-19 levels. This is after India made a positive opening to their U-19 World Cup campaign. Vaibhav was dismissed for 2 runs, yet India overcame the USA by six wickets via the DLS system at the Queens Sports Club Ground in Bulawayo. With this, the young Indian team took a 1-0 lead in Group A.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi is one of the most talked-about names in Indian cricketing circles in the past year. Last season, he made his IPL debut for the Rajasthan Royals side and became the youngest Indian to score a century in the tournament’s history. The left-handed batsman then continued his run-scoring spree on tours to Australia, England, and South Africa, performances that earned him a place in the India A team for the Rising Stars Asia Cup.

Despite being considered one of India's key players in the Under-19 World Cup, Raman believes that Vaibhav's rapid rise needs to be carefully considered in context. This may be an unpopular opinion. Suryavanshi has performed exceptionally well in the A series and the IPL. Playing him at the Under-19 level could be detrimental to his development. There's no doubt he can win matches, but one must always think about the bigger picture.

It's worth noting that Suryavanshi had a quiet start to the tournament on the field. He lasted just four balls against the USA, stepped forward on the track while attempting a shot on the leg side, and his stumps were uprooted. He was out for two runs, whereas he was in good form against Scotland, scoring 96 runs off 50 balls in India's first warm-up match.

However, India performed well enough to win the rain-affected match. Henil Patel performed brilliantly with the ball, taking five wickets as the USA were all out for 107 in 36 overs. Suryavanshi also contributed with the ball, taking the last wicket of Nitish Sudini.

Chasing the target, Abhigyan Kundu remained unbeaten on 42, while Kanishk Chauhan made 18 to give India an easy win. India will face Bangladesh on Saturday and conclude their group-stage campaign against New Zealand on January 24.
