Tenure of JPC constituted on One Nation-One Election extended, BJP MP's proposal approved in Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha has extended the tenure of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on One Nation-One Election. The tenure has been approved to be extended till the first day of the last week of the Monsoon Session 2025. BJP MP PP Choudhary introduced this proposal in the Lok Sabha. Under One Nation-One Election, the target is to conduct simultaneous elections across the country by 2029.

Tenure of JPC constituted on One Nation-One Election extended, BJP MP's proposal approved in Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha on Tuesday approved the motion to extend the tenure of the JPC on 'One Nation, One Election' till the first day of the last week of the Monsoon Session 2025. Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) Chairman PP Choudhary on Tuesday moved in the Lok Sabha to allow more time to present the report on the 'One Nation, One Election' Bill 2024 and the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill 2024.

The Joint Parliamentary Committee discussing the One Nation, One Election Bill will sit at 3 pm today. Attorney General of India R. Venkataramani and former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, and Chairman of Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) Justice DN Patel will present themselves before the committee and give their views.

Former Supreme Court judge Hemant Gupta will share his views. This will be followed by a discussion with former Supreme Court judge and Chairman of the 21st Law Commission of India Justice BS Chauhan. These meetings are part of the committee's review of two bills that aim to make significant changes to the Constitution and the laws governing the Union Territories. The last meeting of the JPC was held on March 18. Former Solicitor General of the country Harish Salve participated in it.
