The concept of American dream which lured thousands of Indian students for decades appears to have lost its charm. The tough visa regulations and the high cost of education in the US and other western nations are forcing Indian students to rethink their choices.
While the US has closed its doors to Indian students, the European Union (EU) appears to be open to Indian talents. The new regulations under the India-EU trade agreement are leading more Indian students and skilled professionals to study in Europe.
Government records reveal that the number of Indian students leaving the country for studies has fallen from 908,000 in 2023 to around 626,000 in 2025. This is primarily because of the strict visa regulations and immigration laws prevailing in the US during the tenure of President Donald Trump and also increased costs in Canada, Australia and the UK.
In contrast, the cost of education (tuition fees) in Europe is 50 to 80 percent lower than in the US. Young people like S. Sriniketan, a 22-year-old student from Chennai, are now opting for Germany over the US. Sriniketan says, "The world is becoming multipolar. The US is very expensive, and we now have better options available."
According to Reuters, a senior EU official stated, "Indian students bring an entrepreneurial spirit, cultural richness, and excellent research capabilities. They are enriching our campuses, and this trend is set to accelerate further." Arnav Kumar, co-founder of the study-abroad platform 'Leap', states that this is the first time a major economic bloc is openly inviting Indian talent on a large scale. He estimates a 60 to 70 percent surge in the number of students and professionals heading to Europe over the next three to five years.
According to the education consultancy 'Europe Study Center', inquiries have risen by 25 to 30 percent following the India-EU trade agreement. Indian students are selecting countries based on their career preferences: Germany for engineering and automobiles, the Netherlands for work-life balance, France for management and business, and Portugal for affordable postgraduate research.
The free movement of people in the European Union, along with the increasing number of postgraduate programmes offered in English, are also attracting Indian students and professionals to Europe. Currently, over 121,000 Indian students are studying in the EU. Universities in Eindhoven and Leiden in the Netherlands have seen a significant increase in applications from Indian students.
However, the path is not entirely smooth. Experts believe that merely obtaining a degree does not guarantee a job. Challenges such as the need to learn the local language, housing shortages in countries like the Netherlands, and the rise of right-wing politics in Europe are factors students must consider. Nevertheless, this stance by the European Union heralds a promising future for Indian youth.
