Toyota has created a next-generation hybrid drive train that will help boost the efficiency of vehicles without the use of a big and heavy battery pack. According to reports, the Japanese auto manufacturer is designing a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine along with a new electronic hybrid design as part of this initiative. It is claimed that Toyota wants to make a 15% gain in fuel economy over its strong hybrid setup.

As opposed to conventional hybrid systems that modify a conventional engine for the electric drive system, the new 1.5-liter engine has been built specifically for the hybrid network. According to Toyota, this will help minimize losses as well as improve the performance of the various components. The naturally aspirated variant of the new engine is said to provide similar performance as Toyota's current 1.8-liter engine and 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine.

Toyota is also working to reduce the size of the entire hybrid system. A smaller setup gives engineers more freedom when designing the vehicle. The biggest advantage is that it allows the hood to be lowered, providing more space for the rest of the vehicle. This compact design can also help reduce aerodynamic drag.
