Char Dham Yatra Resumes After 2-Day Weather Halt

In Uttarkashi district, the administration also temporarily suspended the pilgrimage to Gangotri and Yamunotri for two days. Pilgrims were stopped at designated transit points: Heena on the Gangotri route and Dobata on the Yamunotri route.

"Weather Has Improved"

Speaking to reporters, Anand Swaroop said the suspension was lifted because the weather has improved and there are no warnings from the Meteorological Department. All district administrations have been asked to implement the guidelines in their areas and help facilitate the yatra.

District Magistrates Can Pause It Again

The Commissioner made clear that the resumption is not unconditional. District Magistrates have been authorised to take decisions based on local conditions in their districts.

"In the event of road blockages, heavy rainfall, or adverse weather conditions, District Magistrates may temporarily suspend the Yatra at their own level," he said.

The administration said it is continuously monitoring the weather and the travel routes, and departments and yatra nodal officers have been told to stay alert.

Why It Matters: Late-Season Weather Is Unpredictable

The halt is a reminder that the Himalayan weather can change quickly, even after the main monsoon months. Snowfall at Hemkund Sahib in late September shows that higher-altitude areas can turn cold and difficult with little warning.

For pilgrims, this means the journey may be paused again at short notice in individual districts, even when the overall yatra is open. Flexible travel plans and a buffer day or two can make a big difference.

• Check the weather daily: The administration has specifically asked pilgrims to track weather updates before and during the journey.
• Follow local instructions: If a District Magistrate suspends travel on a route, wait at the designated transit points.
• Register before travel: Registration is mandatory for all pilgrims undertaking the Char Dham Yatra.
• Pack for cold: With snowfall already reported at higher altitudes, warm clothing and rain protection are essential.
• Keep a buffer: Avoid tight schedules, as road blockages or sudden suspensions can delay travel.

The Season So Far

The 2026 yatra began in April, with the portals of Yamunotri and Gangotri opening on April 19 and Kedarnath on April 22. The shrines close for winter every year around Diwali, with the closing dates announced traditionally on Vijayadashami.

That leaves a few weeks of the season for pilgrims who are still planning to go, and makes smooth management of weather disruptions all the more important.

The Char Dham Yatra is back on, but the administration's message is clear: safety comes first. With rain persisting and districts empowered to pause travel at short notice, pilgrims will need to plan carefully and stay updated at every step.
