A Separate, More Serious Incident Involving Air India

Adding to this backdrop of scrutiny, Air India confirmed on Saturday that one of its pilots died due to cardiac arrest while on a layover rest at a hotel in New Delhi. According to the airline's statement, "He was on a layover rest at a hotel in Delhi, where he was found unconscious last evening. He was rushed to the hospital immediately, where he was declared dead." The Mumbai-based pilot had been found unconscious at the hotel on Friday evening before being rushed to hospital, where he was subsequently declared dead. He had previously worked with Air India Express before moving to Air India a couple of months earlier, and had been scheduled to operate a flight early Saturday morning at the time of his death.

An Earlier Safety-Related Incident in August

The current diversion also follows an earlier safety-related event involving an Air India Express flight in August, when an aircraft operating from Kochi to Abu Dhabi made an air turnback in line with established safety protocols after the crew detected a problem with the aircraft mid-flight. Considered alongside Sunday's diversion and the pilot's death, this string of incidents adds to a period of increased operational and safety-related attention on Air India and its subsidiary carriers, even as the airline has emphasised in each case that established safety procedures were followed appropriately.
