The country will soon see a change in dental education like MBBS. The Union Health Ministry has initiated the process of constituting the National Dental Commission (NDC) which will function like the National Medical Commission (NMC) constituted for medical colleges.

Three distinct boards under the NDC will be in charge of accrediting dental colleges, enhancing instruction, rating, and assessment, and creating an open system for BDS and MDS students, according to the ministry's appointment order. Will put in the effort to complete it. The National Dental Commission will be constituted by the Ministry in the upcoming month and will begin operations during the 2024–2025 academic year. To participate in this, the Ministry has also provided opportunities to these specialists who have assisted patients in remote or difficult-to-reach areas.

The Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dental Education Board, the Dental Assessment and Rating Board, and the Dental Registration Board will all fall under the purview of the National Dental Commission. The first dental college in the country was opened in Calcutta in 1920. Since that time, the nation has more than 300 dental colleges that annually educate more than 25,000 dentists.

After its establishment, the NDC will first decide on the practice licence, the opening of new colleges, and the cost of the BDS and MDS programmes. In addition, similar to MBBS, BDS will also be subject to the upcoming test, the passing of which will grant the licence to practise dentistry. In addition, work will be done on Aadhaar-based face scanner technology to expedite college attendance systems and allow accurate student and faculty attendance information to be disclosed. In addition, a programme for family adoption may be put into place.
