First time in Joe Root's Test career, he made this strange record in his name at Lord's after 37 years
Joe Root, India vs England 3rd Test: This is the first time in Joe Root's Test career that he remained unbeaten on 99 runs at the end of the day's play, while this is only the second incident that happened at Lord's ground.

In the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, former England captain Joe Root's bat had remained completely silent till now. But on the first day of the third Test being played at Lord's, he batted brilliantly and remained at the crease till the end of the innings by scoring an unbeaten 99 runs with the help of 9 fours in 191 balls. He intended to finish his century with 2 runs off the final ball, but that wasn't possible, and he walked back to the pavilion unbeaten, one run short of the century.
This is the first time in Joe Root's Test career that he stayed not out on 99 runs at the close of play on a day, whereas this is just the second event to occur at Lord's ground. For the first time in history, this occurred with Alan Lamb in 1988 when he returned not out on 99 runs during a Test match against the West Indies. Joe Root established his place in this list after 37 years.
This is the second time in Joe Root's Test career that he has ended the day with a score of 90-plus. Earlier in 2014, in the Oval Test against India, Root finished the day's play on a score of 92 runs. The next day, he completed that innings unbeaten on 149 runs.
At the same time, in the history of Test cricket, it has happened 17 times before when the player remained unbeaten till the end of the day on a score of 99. However, the good news for Root is that not once in these 17 times did the batsman miss a century. This means that whenever a player has returned to the pavilion after scoring an unbeaten 99 runs at the end of the day, he has come the next day and completed his century. It is hoped that Root will maintain this record.
At the end of the day's play on Thursday, England had scored 251 runs for four wickets. Root is at the crease with 99 runs in 191 balls with the help of nine fours, and Stokes is at the crease with an unbeaten 39 runs in 102 balls. Both have so far made a partnership of 79 runs for the fifth wicket.
