'District judges are getting only Rs 15,000 pension', Supreme Court said - Center should resolve the issue soon
The Supreme Court heard the case related to the pension of district judges. Asked the central government to resolve the issue of the very low pension of judges soon. Asked to find a way by meeting with the amicus curiae. The central government has sought more time in this matter. After this, the hearing has been adjourned till August 27.
The Supreme Court asked the Center to resolve the issues related to very low pensions being given to district judges as soon as possible. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said 'We urge you (Attorney General and Solicitor General) as the guardian of the district judiciary to sit with the amicus curiae and find a solution.'
The CJI said that some of these cases are very complicated. He mentioned the case of a district judge suffering from cancer and said that many petitions are being filed in the Supreme Court by district judges raising pension-related complaints. The bench said that 'District Judges are getting only Rs 15,000 as pension.
District Judges come to the High Court and usually they are promoted to the High Courts at the age of 56 and 57 and they retire with a pension of Rs 30,000 per month.' The CJI said that they cannot even practice law after the age of 60.
Attorney General R Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Center, sought some time in this matter. On this, the bench adjourned the hearing till August 27. The petition seeking implementation of welfare measures for retired judges has been filed by the All India Judges Association.
