Cipla, the top pharmaceutical company in the nation, has been fined Rs 1.83 crore by the GST authority. The company had made false claims regarding education cess, according to the authority. The Central Goods and Services Tax Act of 2017 and the Maharashtra Goods and Services Tax Act require the company to impose a penalty of Rs 1,83,17,388. The company has received notices from the CGST and Central Excise Department. This information was provided by Cipla in a regulatory filing.

It goes on to say that the GST authority issued this order based on the claim that the company claimed an invalid credit for education cess during the transition from excise to GST in the 2017–18 fiscal year. Due to this, a recovery order and fine have been issued to the company.

Cipla further said that based on an assessment of facts and prevailing law, it will file a necessary appeal in this regard with the appellate authority. It said that the said order will not have any significant impact on the financial position or operations of the company.
