Bengal Police Launch Four Anti-Corruption Helplines

“This step is to solve the cancer of corruption that has spread in the state,” Agarwal stated. He emphasised that any resident, regardless of location within West Bengal, can use the helplines to flag the four identified issues.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari framed the initiative as part of a broader effort to align state administration with the national goal of a corruption-free system. “We want to establish a united fight against corruption. The common people are invited to come forward in that fight. Our clear message is that in the fight against corruption, prompt action will be taken if complaints are received,” he said.

Adhikari also announced that one lakh additional police personnel will be inducted in the coming period to improve the police-to-public ratio across the state. The recruitment drive is expected to strengthen the force’s capacity for both routine policing and specialised responses arising from the new complaint mechanism.

Officials present at the launch described the helplines as a direct channel intended to reduce intermediaries and speed up the registration of grievances. By focusing on four high-visibility problem areas—extortion by individual officials, organised syndicate activity, illegal taxation on roads, and the illicit liquor trade—the police aim to generate actionable intelligence while signalling zero tolerance for these practices.

The simultaneous introduction of a large-scale recruitment plan suggests the government is pairing public reporting tools with an expansion of frontline strength. Whether the combination of accessible helplines, recorded accountability and additional manpower produces measurable reductions in the targeted forms of corruption will depend on consistent follow-through and public confidence in the system’s responsiveness.

For now, the four numbers are live, the control room is operational, and the invitation to citizens to participate has been formally extended.
