At the press conference, Sarma stated that the state government will issue the first batch of weapon licenses to indigenous people living in sensitive and remote areas in February 2026. This decision by the Assam government is considered significant because the state is scheduled to hold assembly elections shortly after the issuance of the first batch.
Sarma stated that the government has received a large number of applications for weapon licenses from indigenous people, which are currently being examined. He said, "We have received a large number of applications for weapon licenses. These applications are being examined." He clarified that the government will issue licenses in a very selective manner and not all applicants will be granted permission.
