India has significantly scaled up its humanitarian response to the devastating flash floods that struck Nepal on Wednesday, dispatching a third special flight to Kathmandu on Friday carrying over 10 tonnes of relief material, a full medical team and — most tellingly — a tunnel rescue reconnaissance squad. As rescue and recovery operations continue across the Himalayan nation, the effort marks one of the most comprehensive humanitarian mobilisations India has staged for a neighbour in recent years.
In a post on X, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar detailed the composition of the third flight. "A third flight carrying 10 tonnes of humanitarian assistance has departed for Kathmandu. The assistance includes portable generator sets, dignity kits, food packets and water purification tablets. An 11-member team of doctors, paramedics and a Recce team for Tunnel rescue operations is also on board. India continues to support Nepal's ongoing relief & rescue efforts," he said.
The presence of a Tunnel rescue reconnaissance team is particularly significant. It signals that India isn't just sending emergency supplies — it is now sending specialised recovery capability capable of operating in complex, high-risk terrain where standard rescue teams may not be equipped to intervene.
Jaishankar Personally Receives Rescued Pilgrims
Earlier in the day, EAM Jaishankar arrived at Delhi airport to personally receive 21 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu who had returned from Kathmandu after being rescued from the floods. In a rare public gesture of empathy from a Union Minister, Jaishankar spent time with the returnees to hear their stories directly.
"I welcomed a group comprising 21 tourists from Tamil Nadu who were rescued from the floods that occurred in Nepal. I was deeply moved upon hearing their experiences firsthand. I express my gratitude to the Nepali Army and the government of that country for carrying out this rescue operation. I commend the efforts of the Indian Embassy in Nepal in smoothly coordinating their return to India," he said in a post on X.
The 21 Indian nationals were part of a group that had travelled for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through various travel agents. Their safe return offers a small but meaningful moment of relief amid the ongoing search for hundreds of missing Indians.
Bailey Bridges and a 24x7 MEA Control Room
The relief architecture India is putting in place is not limited to airlifts. New Delhi is also mobilising Bailey bridges — modular, quickly deployable steel bridges — to aid Nepal's rescue and relief operations in areas where local infrastructure has been swept away. Where roads have been destroyed, these bridges will help re-establish access, and with it, evacuation and supply corridors.
The MEA has also set up a control room in New Delhi that is functioning round the clock. Officials are in continuous coordination with state governments from where citizens had travelled to Nepal for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra — a critical linkage to ensure families receive verified information and that identification, rescue and repatriation efforts are properly aligned.
The Numbers: Who Has Been Rescued So Far
At a bi-weekly press briefing in New Delhi on Friday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared key rescue and repatriation numbers. 84 Indian nationals have been rescued so far, including 63 who were working at the Trishuli-1 hydropower project. That project has been a major worry point since the flood struck, given the number of Indian workers deployed at such infrastructure sites.
He also confirmed that 96 Indian nationals who were stranded on the Chinese side have safely crossed into Nepal by land — a significant cross-border coordination outcome, given the challenging terrain and the multiple national systems involved.
