A tribal group from the Churachandpur district of Manipur has said that it will demonstrate against the Centre's plan to build fencing along the border between Myanmar and India.

According to an ITLF statement, on Saturday, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum protested against the Center's plan to build a fence along the India-Myanmar border and end the free movement regime by holding a public consultation in the district headquarters town. So, it was decided to do.

People living on either side of the border can enter each other's territory up to 16 km away without a visa thanks to free movement rules. Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram are the four Indian states that border Myanmar by 1,643 kilometres. ITLF has also decided to approach the Mizoram government for the political future of the 'Kuki Zo' people, the statement said.

According to the news agency PTI, more than 31,000 people from Myanmar have taken refuge in Mizoram following the military coup in the neighbouring country in February 2021. Many people have also taken refuge in Manipur. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in Guwahati on January 20 that the government will end the free movement of people along the India-Myanmar border and completely fence it so that it can be protected like the country's border with Bangladesh.
