FSSAI Action on Packaged Foods: Britannia, Dabur and Other Companies Under Scrutiny Over Food Claims
FSSAI has taken strict action against packaged food and beverage companies making claims like "100% pure," raising questions about the safety of the products sold in the market.
It cannot be assured that the packaged food and beverages available in the market are safe for health. The crackdown of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on packaged food products of the leading firms over the last few days has brought into the limelight the packaged food and beverages available in the market.
FSSAI has clearly stated that firms dealing with packaged foods cannot make statements such as "100% pure" or "100% organic" on their product packages. Recently, bread by a leading company such as Britannia did not match up to its claim of "100%" bread.
Britannia, which is a leading firm in the bread market segment, made claims regarding the fact that the bread it sold was 100% wheat bread, but in reality, it was not fully made out of wheat. However, Britannia MD Rakshit Hargave has justified the step taken by FSSAI against packaged and beverage products as one that was done for the benefit of consumers.
