The current IPL 2026 has not been good for Suryakumar Yadav, who is currently going through a difficult time in terms of form. He has only managed to score 195 runs in ten matches, with an average of 19.52 and a strike rate of below 150. The same trend was evident in the recent T20 World Cup, where India emerged victorious, but he faced challenges in his batting except for the match against the USA. Therefore, the BCCI selectors, headed by Ajit Agarkar, are considering replacing him with a new captain. It is being discussed that three names, including Sanju Samson, are being considered.

Sanju Samson, who was named Player of the Tournament in the 2026 T20 World Cup, is considered a frontrunner for India's next captain. This change in captaincy could be seen in the upcoming series against Ireland and England. Following the T20 World Cup, Sanju Samson's impressive performance continues in IPL 2026. He has scored 402 runs in 10 matches so far at an average of 57.43 and a strike rate of 167.50. He has also scored two centuries this season, making him the only batsman to achieve this feat. He is also being considered as the next captain of CSK after Ruturaj Gaikwad.

There is talk of making Shreyas Iyer the next captain. The current Punjab Kings captain is impressed with his ability to remain calm even in stressful situations. The selectors are also impressed with the way Shreyas has led Punjab Kings to the top. So far in IPL 2026, he has scored 333 runs in 9 innings across 10 matches at an average of 47.57. Shreyas has not played a T20 International for India since December 2023. Given Suryakumar's decline in form, Shreyas could provide India with a good middle-order option.

India's Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill is also being considered. Gill has not played a T20 International for India in a long time. However, Shubman Gill is batting brilliantly in IPL 2026. The Gujarat Titans captain has scored 378 runs in nine innings across nine matches this season at an average of 42 and a strike rate of 154.92. He has also scored three half-centuries during this period. His best score is 86. Under his captaincy, the Gujarat Titans have won six out of ten matches and are currently placed fifth in the points table.
