Sawan Begins: Devotees Throng Shiva Temples Nationwide

In the national capital, a significant number of devotees visited the historic Gauri Shankar Temple in Old Delhi. Special rituals were held and worshippers sought blessings for peace and well-being. One devotee told IANS that while the first day had drawn a steady crowd, the largest gatherings were expected on the first Monday of Sawan.

In Noida, the Sanatan Temple in Sector 19 remained busy throughout the day as people performed rituals and offered prayers. In Ayodhya, pilgrims visited the Ram Temple and other places of worship, with visitors arriving from nearby districts and neighbouring states.

One of the largest congregations was reported from Varanasi, where thousands of devotees gathered at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Pilgrims from different parts of the country, including a group from Amritsar, arrived to offer prayers. Temple authorities noted that arrangements were functioning smoothly and anticipated a steady increase in numbers over the coming weeks.

Sawan, also known as Shravan Maas, is regarded as one of the most sacred months dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees traditionally observe fasts, perform special pujas and make offerings of water, milk and other items to Shiva Lingams. The month is associated with spiritual discipline, devotion and reflection. Key observances during the period include Shravan Shivratri, the Kanwar Yatra and Hariyali Amavasya. Sawan Shivratri, observed on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha, is considered the most important occasion of the month.

This year the month began on 30 July and will conclude on 28 August. Temple authorities and local administrations across northern India are preparing for higher footfall in the weeks ahead, particularly on Mondays and on major festival days within the month.
