New Delhi, July 30 — The holy month of Sawan began on Thursday with large numbers of devotees visiting Shiva temples across several states to offer prayers and perform traditional rituals.

In Patna, worshippers arrived early at local Shiva temples to perform jalabhishek and other offerings. Long queues formed outside several shrines as people marked the start of one of the most significant months in the Hindu calendar.

In Uttarakhand, the focus was on Haridwar, where Kanwariyas carrying Ganga water began their journeys. Authorities have put in place extensive security arrangements along the pilgrimage routes, including the deployment of additional police personnel and continuous monitoring through CCTV networks. In Rishikesh, devotees and Kanwariyas started arriving at temples, including the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, from midnight. Long lines of worshippers offered water, milk, flowers, fruits and sweets. Temple officials reported a clear rise in footfall compared with ordinary days.
