Philippines President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. arrived in New Delhi on Monday afternoon. His bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled for Tuesday. Both countries have stated that these discussions will be a significant step toward strengthening their mutual strategic and economic relations. During the talks, special emphasis will be placed on advancing defense cooperation.
Additionally, they will discuss expanding collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, and maritime security. The leaders will also address regional issues in the Indo-Pacific. The Philippines is involved in territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea and with India in the Himalayan region. Notably, the Philippines received the first batch of India's BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system in 2024, and deliveries are underway.
Official sources indicate ongoing negotiations between the Philippines and India regarding some new defense agreements. These agreements are expected to take concrete shape during the meeting between Modi and Marcos. It is also worth noting that, following the Philippines President’s visit to India, both navies are prepared to commence joint maritime exercises in the South China Sea.
Both nations will also explore new approaches to their economic relationship. After the US recently imposed a 19 percent duty on Filipino goods, strengthening trade ties with India has become a priority for Manila. The leaders plan to focus on enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, and digital technology.
