Mumbai, July 28 — India’s reigning World Champion D Gukesh will defend his title against Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov in the FIDE World Chess Championship Match 2026, to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 25 November to 15 December 2026, the world chess body announced on Tuesday.

Both players will be 20 years old when the match begins, making the contest the youngest World Championship in history. Gukesh won the crown in December 2024 by defeating China’s Ding Liren in Singapore, becoming the 18th World Champion and the youngest player ever to hold the title. He is the second Indian, after Viswanathan Anand, to claim the world championship.

Sindarov earned the right to challenge by winning the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 in Cyprus, securing first place with a round to spare. The result followed his victory at the 2025 FIDE World Cup and confirmed his place as the official challenger.
