Three Price Hikes in 50 Days: Tamil Nadu Households Pay More for Rice

The Supply Problem

The rise is rooted in the fields. Cultivation in the Cauvery Delta has suffered from poor rainfall and a shortage of irrigation water. At the same time, harvests in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka have declined, reducing the quantity of paddy reaching Tamil Nadu's rice mills.

That has pushed up costs for millers. Mills are now paying about ₹44 a kg for paddy from other states, compared with ₹32 in the previous season, an increase of 37.5%. Mill owners link the reduced arrivals partly to a poor April harvest.

Why It Matters: Tamil Nadu Eats What It Doesn't Grow

The squeeze is sharpest for Ponni because of a structural gap. Ponni is a staple for many consumers in Tamil Nadu, but the state grows relatively little of the fine variety it consumes. That makes local prices highly sensitive to harvests in neighbouring states.

In simple terms, when Andhra Pradesh, Telangana or Karnataka have a weak season, Tamil Nadu's kitchens feel it too, even if the state's own crop does reasonably well.

The Kuruvai Worry

Kuruvai is the short-duration paddy crop grown in the Cauvery Delta during the southwest monsoon season. With cultivation hit by poor rainfall and water shortage, traders fear losses in the kuruvai crop will further cut local availability. They expect prices to stay under pressure if interstate supplies remain low.

Two Views on What Comes Next

Not everyone in the trade shares the same outlook. Mill owners expect paddy arrivals to improve in the coming months and believe prices could settle once supplies recover. Retailers, however, are worried about further increases.

The difference reflects genuine uncertainty over how quickly new stocks will reach the market.

A Long-Term Fix?

The price rise has renewed calls to expand cultivation of the fine paddy varieties Tamil Nadu consumers prefer. Greater local production could reduce the state's dependence on neighbouring harvests and make prices less vulnerable to poor seasons elsewhere.

Who Feels It Most

For families that buy rice every week or month, even a ₹10–₹20 rise per kg adds up quickly. The sharpest rise, in raw rice, hits a variety widely used for everyday cooking, meaning the pinch is not limited to buyers of premium grains.

In the short term, rice prices in Tamil Nadu will depend on one thing: whether fresh paddy arrivals are enough to meet demand. Until then, households are likely to keep paying more for their most basic staple.
