India Crosses 1.1 Billion Broadband Users: TRAI August Data

During the month, 15.83 million subscribers submitted requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP). That works out to about 1.3% of active mobile users looking to switch operators in a single month, a sign that competition on price and service quality remains strong.

Wireline: Small but Growing Faster

Wireline subscribers increased from 48.01 million at the end of July to 48.45 million at the end of August, a net addition of 0.44 million. The monthly growth rate of 0.93% was higher than the 0.61% growth in overall broadband.

Overall wireline tele-density rose from 3.36% to 3.39%.

The Urban–Rural Divide

The wireline data shows a sharp gap between cities and villages:

Urban wireline tele-density is more than 14 times the rural figure. In other words, fixed-line connections remain overwhelmingly a city phenomenon.

Public sector providers BSNL, MTNL and APSFL together held 16.05% of the wireline market at the end of August.

Why It Matters: Two Different Internet Stories

The numbers tell two stories at once. On mobile, India is close to saturation in reach, with over a billion broadband users, and the competition is now about keeping customers, as the MNP figures show.

On fixed lines, the story is still early. Wireline connections are growing faster in percentage terms, but they remain concentrated in cities. For rural India, mobile data remains the main, and often only, route to the internet. Closing that gap matters for services that benefit from stable, high-speed connections, such as online education, work from home and telemedicine.

Rating Buildings for Connectivity

TRAI last week also launched the Digital Connectivity Rating (DCR) Platform, which lets consumers view properties rated for their digital connectivity. The platform supports the full rating process, and a mobile app is available to test connectivity.

"By making ratings publicly searchable and verify the certificates, the platform will empower consumers with credible and comparable information. It will help them make more informed choices about homes and offices with strong and reliable connectivity, supporting smoother calls, downloads and access to online services," said TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti.

For home buyers and office tenants, this could add a new factor to property decisions: not just location and price, but also how well a building is connected.

India has crossed 1.1 billion broadband users, a landmark for digital access. The next challenge is quality and reach: better fixed-line connectivity beyond cities, and reliable networks inside the buildings where people live and work.
