India to Host World Circular Economy Forum 2026

Why Hosting This Forum Matters for India

Securing the first South Asian edition of WCEF signals a deliberate positioning move for India within global environmental and sustainability diplomacy. Circular economy principles have gained increasing traction internationally as countries grapple with resource scarcity, waste management challenges and the environmental costs of linear "take-make-dispose" production models. By hosting an event of this scale, India gets an opportunity to showcase its own circularity initiatives directly to international business leaders, policymakers and innovators, while also using the platform to deepen cooperation specifically with other Global South nations facing similar developmental and environmental pressures.

The Organisations Behind the Forum

WCEF 2026 is being jointly organised by the Central Pollution Control Board, the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, the Government of Finland, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Government of Gujarat, and the Gujarat Pollution Control Board. This combination of Indian environmental bodies and Finnish institutional partners reflects Finland's long-standing role as an early pioneer in circular economy policy, with Sitra in particular having been instrumental in launching the World Circular Economy Forum series originally.

Scale and Scope of Participation

The forum is expected to draw more than 2,000 stakeholders from over 65 countries, encompassing business leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, researchers, policymakers, academicians and other changemakers working across the circular economy space. Beyond showcasing India's own circularity initiatives, the event aims to serve as a platform for strengthening international cooperation on these issues, with particular emphasis on collaboration with the Global South. Discussions will also focus on mobilising circular finance and private-sector investment, promoting policy dialogue and cross-sector partnerships, and advancing innovation, digitalisation and technology applications relevant to circular economic models.

A Packed Two-Day Session Schedule

On September 15 and 16, the forum will feature four plenary sessions alongside 16 parallel thematic sessions covering a wide range of topics, including artificial intelligence, employment potential, energy production, finance, governance, sustainable products, industrial solutions, start-up ecosystems and youth leadership. This breadth of thematic coverage suggests an attempt to address circular economy principles not as a narrow environmental niche, but as a cross-cutting issue with implications for technology, employment, industrial policy and youth engagement.

An Exhibition of Practical Solutions

Complementing the sessions, an exhibition featuring more than 125 national and international exhibitors will showcase practical circular economy solutions developed by start-ups, alongside investment-ready innovations, giving attendees direct exposure to tangible applications of circularity principles rather than purely theoretical or policy-focused discussions.

A Related International Meeting on the Sidelines

On the sidelines of the main forum, the Board of the 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10 YFP) will hold an in-person meeting in Gandhinagar on September 15, adding a further layer of international coordination to the broader event and reinforcing Gandhinagar's role as a temporary hub for global sustainability governance during this period.
